Bal is a highly experienced construction and engineering solicitor. Bal primarily advises clients on non-contentious issues, including drafting and reviewing building contracts, appointments, warranties and other security documentation.

Bal acts for a diverse range of clients including employers, private developers, building contractors, consultants, funders and clients in the education sector. Bal assists these clients at every stage, from planning and project inception to project completion, and is able to offer support for unexpected problems that arise post completion.

Specialising in advising clients on industry standard contracts such as JCT, NEC, IChemE, FIDIC, PPC2000, ICE, MF/1 as well as bespoke forms of contract, Bal is well-versed in the workings of the contracts enabling her to offer thorough and well-thought out advice in the context of delivering against the strategic objectives of her clients.

Bal has experience in advising clients on dispute avoidance and dispute resolution, such as arbitration, litigation and adjudication.

Bal has provided procurement advice to a number of housing associations and local authorities, such as advising on the administration of tendering exercises, drafting of OJEU Notices and pre-qualification questionnaires and drafting framework agreements to ensure clients advertise contracts transparently and in accordance with procurement legislation.

Bal is also experienced in providing commercial advice and assistance to businesses.  Bal regularly reviews and prepares commercial contracts such as terms and conditions, software development agreements, supply contracts, referral agreements, franchising agreements, consultancy agreements and distribution agreements.  Bal also provides advice on intellectual property rights and data protection, such as privacy policies and website terms. 

Bal has regularly presents seminars to industry professionals on legislation updates, administration of contracts and workshops on procurement methods.     

As part of our approach to cross-firm collaboration, Bal also provides support to the Real Estate team advising on construction obligations within developments agreements, golden brick arrangements parallel with building agreements, licences to carry out works and advice regarding warranties, parent company guarantees and performance bonds for end-users.

  • Acted for Academy Trust in relation to the construction of 3 new school sites for Social, Emotional & Mental Health provision. This has involved reviewing a development agreement, building contract, forms of appointment, sub-contracts, warranties and deed of novation and amending those contracts to ensure favourable risk allocation to the client.   
  • Acted for a regional college in relation to the construction of a sixth form college and refurbishment of existing property. Bal worked closely with College’s internal estates department in the two stage design and build procurement, the appointment of the preferred bidder and the negotiation and production of a complete suite of construction documents in relation to the project, including the JCT building contract (including amendments), consultant’s appointments and consultant/sub-contractor collateral warranties.
  • Acted for college based in Yorkshire on various projects to provide advice on the appointment of building contractors and the negotiation and production of a complete suite of construction documents in relation to the projects, including JCT/NEC3 building contracts (including amendments), consultant’s appointments and consultant/sub-contractor collateral warranties.
  • Acted for a regional University in relation to providing advice in relation to construction projects on Campus as well as drafting precedent construction contracts for the appointment of contractors and consultants for projects the University is involved in, such as a minor works contract, and contractor and consultant framework agreements.
  • Drafting a suite of contracts on behalf of a number of private developers for the development of multi-million pound care homes, including due diligence on behalf of the funders.
  • Provided construction advice to contractors on a number of new build developments, refurbishments, student accommodation, points of interest and energy initiatives, including drafting building contracts, professional appointments and warranties

  • Provided a number of clients with advice on defects, contract administration and breaches of contract during and post completion of new build developments

  • Drafting generic forms of sub-contracts for a number of national sub-contractors.

  • Providing a fixed price contract review service to a number of contractors, insurance brokers, consultants and suppliers, in order to assist clients to mitigate risks prior to entering into a contract

Bal is part of the committee of National Assocation of Women in Construction (North East) which aims to promote and support women working in the construction industry. Bal has worked to organise a number of events, such as a charity ball at Durham Castle, University Open Day for students looking for work in the construction industry at Northumbria University and other fun events such as plastering courses. 

Bal enjoys travelling to the lake district every few months and hopes to save up for an apartment there one day. Bal recently experienced her first mountain climbing experience in the lakes. Skiddaw may not be the largest mountain there but is certainly an achievement in her eyes!
