Tom Thurlow


The Legal 500 - The Clients Guide to Law Firms

Tom is part of the Professions & Insurance team and has been described in the Legal 500 as “very clear and thorough”. Tom is based in our Newcastle office but has recently spent a lot of time in London working on the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.

Tom works on a variety of professional indemnity claims including, construction disputes, claims against various professionals (including solicitors, architects, structural engineers, geo-technical engineers, asbestos surveyors, cladders, approved Inspectors and accountants), and property damage claims. Tom has also worked on a number of technology matters.

For the last two years, following the Grenfell Tower disaster, Tom has been highly involved in various cladding and curtain walling disputes. Tom has also had a regular presence at the Grenfell Tower Inquiry and has delivered training on façade / cladding claims.

recent experience

  • Settling a multi-million pound, multi-party dispute timetabled for a month long trial in the TCC concerning allegedly deficient foundations and drainage at a large warehouse, for less than was offered at the first mediation by formally instructed solicitors two year earlier.
  • Successfully settling a claim brought against a process server.
  • Acting under substantial time pressure to reach agreement on replacing curtain walling in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster.
  • Settling a significant claim against an asbestos surveyor relating to a hotel.
  • Settling a multi-million pound policy dispute for excess layer insurers relating to defective foundations installed at a large warehouse.
  • Advising an accountant following a referral to the ICAEW.
  • Settling a claim against an IT provider in relation to a claim being brought by a former client regarding lost data following a fire at the client’s premises.
  • Securing a recovery against an architect and structural engineer where Watson Burton had previously settled a dispute relating to defective corrosion protection applied to 3 blocks of flats.
  • Advising one of the corporate core participants involved in the Grenfell Inquiry and managing relations with the Police and the Press.
  • Providing policy coverage advice in relation to various potential Third Party (Rights Against Insurers) Act 1930 / 2010 claims arising out of defective M&E works at a large development.
  • Successfully pursuing a claim against a firm of solicitors arising from negligent advice as to the operation of overage provisions in a contract for the sale of a large caravan park.
  • Advising planning consultants in relation to a dispute concerning a wind turbine.
  • Advising an Approved Inspector in relation to various cladding /façade related issues in respect of a hospital.

Tom is a keen cyclist and once cycled from Rome to Toulouse in 11 days. He also lived in Finland for a year.
