Experienced property partner, Naren Deen, is head of the Real Estate team.

With over 15 years experience in the delivery of commercially focused legal advice, Naren has gained substantial investment and secured lending experience mostly accrued during his time working in London and South East England.

At Watson Burton Naren has overseen a number of significant projects, ranging from straight forward academy conversions to the re-financing of a leading University’s property portfolio. 

Well known within the North of England especially, Naren has acted primarily for a listed property fund in all aspects of acquisition and disposal of commercial property investment assets (with particular focus on the retail and office sectors), the disposal of a UK building society to a US bank and has also acted for a Middle Eastern royal family in connection with a number of high value landlord and tenant matters in Central London, including the establishment of a foreign diplomatic mission in Kensington.

Adding further weight to his impressive experience, Naren has been heavily involved in a number of landmark regeneration schemes throughout England and Wales, including:

  • The regeneration of a large area of central Middlesbrough
  • The planning and site assembly process of the creation of a new town in South East England
  • And further afield, in the strategic planning phase of the creation of a new ‘petrochemical city’ in Qatar.

Naren gained considerable experience in advising public bodies including hospitals, schools, colleges, universities in management of their properties portfolios and a number of development projects.

Naren has a particular interest in the healthcare sector, representing a number of leading care home groups as well as advising many GPs, dentists and other healthcare professionals
Adept at providing solutions to the complex issues that may arise on lending transactions, Naren also boasts a wealth of experience advising on ground rent financings.

Naren’s experience and approach to problem solving ideally places him to manage our service delivery to Aviva when investing in ground rent portfolios and overseeing the work required by our lending clients including Handelsbanken, RBS and Seneca.

recent experience

  • Refinancing a mixed use portfolio of over 40 properties involving complex cross boarder issues.  The Transaction raised many legal and regulatory issues.  Naren was able to work methodically through the issues whilst managing hte competing interests and requirements of the various parties to the transaction.
  • Negotiating and completing a complex emergency funding package for a leading sporting club.  the transaction was carried out at very short notice and involved a number of public and private sector stakeholders: Naren used a combination of innovative technical solutions and strong commercial accumen to deliver within a very tight timeframe.
  • Co-ordinated a refinance project undertaken by a leading university.  The finance was secured on the University's externsive and diverse property portfolio.  Naren's straight-forward problem solving approach helped the real estate team to secure a successful outcome.
