selection criteria

In common with most commercial law firms, Watson Burton LLP receives a large number of applications for Training Contracts. We are committed to fairness in the recruitment and selection of candidates for employment with the firm. We are an equal opportunities employer, and all selection decision are based solely on the merits of each applicant. This document sets out the criteria against which applications for Training Contracts will be considered. Candidates should consider this document carefully before submitting their application, and should seek to demonstrate throughout the recruitment and selection process the ways in which they meet these criteria.

Academic qualifications

  • Candidates should have the equivalent of A2 Level passes in traditional academic subjects (for example Chemistry, Mathematics, English Literature, History, Modern Languages or Ancient Languages) excluding General Studies.
  • The minimum acceptable grades at A Level or equivalent are AAB. We do not accept A/S grades.
  • Candidates should possess or be expected to obtain either a law degree with a 2.i classification or above; or a degree in another academic subject with a 2.i classification or above plus successful completion of the CPE or GDL.
  • Any offer of a Training Contract will be conditional upon candidates successfully completing the Legal Practice Course.

    Successful applicants will be required to provide proof of their academic qualifications prior to commencement of employment with the firm.   


    Miscellaneous Criteria

    In addition to meeting the specific criteria set out above, candidates should be able to demonstrate in their application and at interview that they:-

  • Can present themselves in a professional and credible way, appropriate to a career as a solicitor
  • Can communicate effectively with a wide range of people from different backgrounds
  • Can work effectively as part of a team
  • Can use both their intellectual skills and their creativity to solve problems
  • Have taken part in activities beyond their academic and / or professional careers
  • Have a genuine interest in a career as a lawyer
  • Have well-considered reasons for applying to Watson Burton.
